Our way versus God’s way

Take a moment to reflect on each of the following verses.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

Isaiah‬ ‭55‬:‭8‬-‭9‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“As for God, his way is perfect: The Lord’s word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him. For who is God besides the Lord? And who is the Rock except our God? It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure. He makes my feet like the feet of a deer; he causes me to stand on the heights. He trains my hands for battle; my arms can bend a bow of bronze. You make your saving help my shield; your help has made me great. You provide a broad path for my feet, so that my ankles do not give way.” 2 Samuel‬ ‭22:31-37‬ ‭NIV‬‬

This is what the Lord says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord. That person will be like a bush in the wastelands; they will not see prosperity when it comes. They will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives.”

Jeremiah‬ ‭17‬:‭5-6‬ ‭NIV‬‬

“But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.” Jeremiah‬ ‭17‬:‭ ‭7‬-‭8 ‭NIV‬‬

“Woe to the obstinate children,” declares the Lord, “to those who carry out plans that are not mine, forming an alliance, but not by my Spirit, heaping sin upon sin;”

‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭30‬:‭1‬NIV‬‬

“Yet the Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice. Blessed are all who wait for him!” Isaiah‬ ‭30‬:‭18 NIV

This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength.” Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.”

Isaiah 30: 15,21

“Show me your ways, Lord, teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long.” Psalms‬ ‭25‬:‭4‬-‭5‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Reflect

The Bible is full of stories about people who choose to walk their own way versus the way God was guiding them to follow. Think about Jonah chapters 1-4 and Genesis chapter 12.

Have you ever felt called to do something you did not want to do?

How did things turn out for Abram, for Jonah, for the sailors and for the Ninevites when they followed God’s will versus when they were just going along with their own desires?
